Blood sugar, in plain numbers.

In Canada, prediabetes means blood sugar that’s higher than normal but not in the diabetes range. Not everyone with prediabetes goes on to develop type 2 diabetes, but many people do.

  • 6.1–6.9 mmol/L fasting plasma glucose is in the prediabetes range. Diabetes Canada
  • 6.0–6.4% A1C is in the prediabetes range. Diabetes Canada
  • 7.8–11.0 mmol/L two hours into a 75 g glucose tolerance test is in the prediabetes range. Diabetes Canada

The Canadian numbers

What prediabetes means.

Diabetes Canada diagnoses prediabetes from any one of three results: a fasting glucose, an A1C, or a two-hour glucose tolerance test.

US websites often show different cut-offs. These are Diabetes Canada’s.
